The Center for Addiction and Mental Health Research (CAMHR) conducts high-impact research at​ Kaiser Permanente Northern California, a learning health care delivery system. For over 20 years, CAMHR scientists have advanced the fields of addiction and mental health research and improved care for patients with these chronic conditions. With an emphasis on research conducted in medical settings, CAMHR contributes to building the evidence base at the intersection of implementation science, health services research, cost-effectiveness, prevention, and clinical outcomes.​​

Substance use

  • Treatment access and quality; integrating care for addiction with primary care; screening and brief intervention; emphasis on alcohol, opioids, cannabis, tobacco, and vaping

Mental health

  • Treatment access and quality; comorbidity with chronic health conditions; seriously mentally ill; adverse childhood experiences and trauma exposure

Special Populations

  • Adolescent behavioral health; pregnant women; older adults

Our research collaborators include the NIDA Clinical Trials Network, the Mental Health Research Network, the Health Care Systems Research Network, University of California San Francisco Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, as well as other university partners.
